RULE #1 STAY POSITIVE!
For the last 25 plus years, our service has been mostly used by people who
happen to work in sectors of the economy that are going through contractions.
For example, a few years ago we helped hundreds of people from the computer
industry during the “dot com bust”. You may remember that the general economy
was booming at the time, but the IT industry was doing exactly the opposite. As
far as the people who worked in that industry were concerned, they were in the
middle of a full blown recession. Nevertheless, each one of them had to find
their way through the downturn and get on with their lives and careers – which
is exactly what the majority did. Other examples of our outplacement experience
include dealing with the ups and downs of the mining, financial, hospitality,
tourism, automotive, aerospace, healthcare and retail industries.
The market in 2010 may not be great, but it’s not dead. (See “Hidden Job Market”
on the next page). Actually for some people, opportunities for more satisfying
employment can actually improve under these slower conditions. There are two
main reasons for this. (a) Being laid off forces people to take stock of their
lives and to make the career (or location) changes that they would probably not
have made if they were still employed – it’s always easier to stay with the
daily routine. (b) In slow times, companies sometimes need people who can bring
a new perspective and enthusiasm to the work. They want progressive, positive
people who can think outside of the box and be prepared to roll up their sleeves
and achieve better results with fewer resources and tighter budgets. Sometimes
this can best be done by hiring a new face who comes with no preconceived ideas
or attitude; and, most importantly, with no political baggage from past
associations with their other key employees and managers – who may be part of
the problem. As corporate outplacement consultants, we see that all the time!
That is what the “Hidden Job Market” is all about, and why we find that positive
people generally find work before negative people find work!
